NZTrio

ENSEMBLE IN RESIDENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND

One of New Zealand’s most acclaimed professional chamber groups, NZTrio is widely hailed for its innovative repertoire and dynamic interpretations of both traditional and contemporary classical music.

Together since 2002, NZTrio took up residency at The University of Auckland in July 2004. In addition to teaching and performing at the University’s School of Music, the Trio commissions works by leading New Zealand composers and collaborates with musicians of diverse musical styles. The ensemble also visits secondary schools in the Auckland region, sharing their expertise and enthusiasm with groups largely unexposed to such artistry. Throughout their musical and educational endeavours, NZTrio focuses on its goal to broaden the community’s interest in, and appreciation for chamber music.

Over the past five years NZTrio has completed a number of international tours, earning high praise from audiences in Brazil, the United States, Europe and North Asia. In 2005 NZTrio released its debut album, Spark, which is dedicated to New Zealand music and features an eclectic mix of styles, moods and energy. The album is heralded as a “must-have for lovers of chamber music”. Their follow-up CD, which has a Pacific Rim focus, will be released later this year.

2007 is proving to be an exciting and varied year for NZTrio. They are recording their much-anticipated second album, performed in the AK07 Festival in March and undertook a Celebrity Tour with Chamber Music New Zealand in April. The middle of the year saw further concerts in Christchurch and Auckland and involvement in the Michael Hill International Violin Competition. This participation included a performance in the opening concert and a semifinal round in which the top six contestants performed with NZTrio. In August they joined forces with the APO to give the Auckland premiere of Gareth Farr’s Triple Concerto, a dynamic and energetic work commissioned by NZTrio. They conclude their busy year with a concert tour to Indonesia, Singapore and Australia, showcasing NZ music at the 2007 Arts Summit in Jakarta and the Two Islands Conference/Festival in Brisbane.
